Upcoming Bike Rides and Information:

The 2nd annual United Methodist Church & Nevada Bike Club trail bike ride will now be held on Saturday, June 21st, meeting at the trailhead in Ira at 9:30am.    For the UMC members we will have a new sign up sheet in church as the date gets closer.   At 8:15am meet at the church to load bikes & etc. for those needing rides or someone to carry your bike.  (Bike Club members contact me if you will need a ride or someone to carry your bike or other items.)   Others can plan on meeting us at the trailhead in Ira around 9:30am.  We have the community building rented (has sink running water, refrigerator, chair & tables, etc) outside pit style toilets, pop machine, grills, play area for children, etc.  No Cost.  Bring a sack lunch.  Hog Dogs, buns, drink, and some deserts will be provided.  Feel free to bring some food to share with everyone.  (last year we had plenty of food with a lot left over)  We will ride and plan to meet back at the starting point around 12:00 pm (noon) for lunch)  This is a fairly flat & hard surface trail that extends approx. 5 miles east from Ira to Baxter.  Or go West to Mingo or further on to Bondurant (approx. 15 miles west)  This is a very nice trail which everyone seems to enjoy.

I’ve heard some talk of a group wanting to ride from Nevada down to Ira & back and make a 100 mile day trip out of this.  This would be a great time and you would have sag vehicles, food, and etc. available.  Let me know if you would be interested for something to be set up.

The RAGBRAI committee has requested the Nevada Bike Clubs help in preparations for RAGBRAI going through Nevada on July 23rd.    They have asked us to help with the Ride Right.  This looks to be fun.    More later.

Wednesday May 21st the Ride of Silence will again be observed.  Those wishing to attend should plan to meet at Skunk River Cycles around 6:30pm with the ride starting at 7pm.  (This ride commemorates bicycle riders who have been killed or injured while riding.)   I plan on leaving Nevada around 5:50pm and riding over to Skunk River to attend the ride.  Anyone who is interested is welcome to join me.  I will be at the Nevada Hardware Store parking lot at 5:50pm.   If you go or not please join me that day for a moment of silence & prayer for those who have been killed or injured while riding their bike.

Join the Club?

If you are interested in joining the Nevada Bike Club please send an email to Ken Hawcott (kmhaw@iowatelecom.net) and he will add you to the list.  We would also like to know what type of bicycle rider you are.  Please fill out the “rider information” below and any contact information you would like to share with the group.  All club information will send via email communication within the membership list and will be located on this site.

Rider Information:

1. What cycling groups of people would you like to be involved with on the following chart that was taken off of the RAGBRAI web site:  (Feel free to place yourself in more than one group.)  An example would be if you are a fast paced rider but also enjoy riding with Leisure & Moderate riders you should note that for us.)

Leisure Pace Riders: These are riders whose average speed is 12 miles per hour or less. They may not have the physical ability to ride faster than this pace. Or, more likely, they're just not in a hurry and want to fully enjoy the Iowa scenery and their fellow riders.

Moderate Pace Riders: These are riders whose average speed is 13 to 17 miles per hour. These riders enjoy going fast, but also want to be able to hold conversations with fellow riders. They may be riders who ride throughout the year, including after RAGBRAI.

Fast Pace Riders: These are riders whose average speed is 18 mph or above. They are riding so fast there is little opportunity to hold conversations with anyone except others riding their pace. The scenery is often a blur. These riders are athletic and will train on and off their bike most of the year.

2. What type of rides do you wish to participate in??     (Short distance, long distance, training, trails only, small group rides, short rides in town only, etc.)

3. Any suggestions or comments on what you would like to see happen with the development of this cycling group or club?   And would you help to set up rides, events, etc.
