The town of Nevada was founded June 17, 1853. The site was selected as the future county seat of Story County. Joseph Thrift, a land commissioner who liked mountains, named the town "Nevada" after the Sierra Nevada range. The name means "a snowy place" in Spanish. T. E. Alderman, the first settler, came from a farm in southeast Iowa and started a mercantile business.
